Medical Display Manufacturers and Suppliers in the Americas

A surgical display in the operating room and a diagnostic display in a reading room may look alike, but they do very different jobs: one shows live video from an endoscope, the other the finest shades of gray in an X-ray. If you need medical displays in the Americas, where you look depends on where you are.

This guide covers North America (the United States, Canada and Mexico) and South America (Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru). Most of the brand owners and manufacturers are in the United States, from display specialists to surgical equipment companies, so there you can often deal directly with the company behind the display. Elsewhere, the usual route is a local distributor bringing in brands from Europe and Asia, such as Barco from Belgium and EIZO from Japan, while a handful of companies, mostly in Brazil, sell surgical displays of their own.

Sourcing beyond the Americas?

Medical display manufacturers and suppliers in the United States

The US companies below fall into four groups: medical display specialists, surgical and operating room equipment companies, distributors, and companies with a medical display line next to their main business. Many US hospitals buy through group purchasing organizations (GPOs) that negotiate supply contracts on their behalf (US Government Accountability Office), so it is worth checking which of these companies your contracts already cover.

Companies that specialize in medical displays

These five companies are built around medical displays and medical imaging. Between them, they cover displays from 12MP mammography models to 4K surgical models, and two of them, DBI and FSN, use Mini-LED backlights in their 4K surgical models.

Double Black Imaging

Double Black Imaging (DBI) has been selling medical displays since 2002 from Louisville, Colorado. Its range covers radiology, mammography, clinical review, digital pathology and surgery, and its customers are radiology groups, health systems and hospitals.

On the diagnostic side, the C5MPL is a 5MP display and the Gemini 12MP is built for mammography. The PA27 is for pathology, and the DB27SF-4K is a 27-inch 4K surgical display with a Mini-LED backlight. DBI also offers reading workstations and its own calibration software, CFS Calibration Suite®, which calibrates displays to the DICOM grayscale standard and produces quality reports. DBI says it calibrates and tests its displays and provides after-sales support in Colorado.

FSN Medical Technologies

FSN Medical Technologies (Foreseeson Custom Displays, Inc.) was founded in 2000 and has its US office in Anaheim, California. Its focus is the operating room: surgical displays, plus systems that manage, record and route OR video. It also offers custom display design, co-development and production services for other companies.

Its FM-E3250D series is a 32-inch 4K surgical display with a Mini-LED backlight divided into 2,304 zones. FSN’s website also lists diagnostic and clinical displays from WIDE, a Korean brand. In the US, FSN displays are sold through USA Medical and Surgical Supplies and Ampronix; in Europe, through Nirolo in the Netherlands (see the European supplier table).

Ampronix

Ampronix, in Irvine, California, supplies and repairs medical imaging and surgical displays, and also handles audio-visual integration for hospitals, clinics and system integrators. It holds ISO 13485 certification, the quality management standard for medical device companies.

Ampronix describes itself as an authorized distributor for EIZO, Sony, Barco, LG and FSN, among others. It also has its own brand, Medvix. The Medvix AMVX2408HD is a 24.1-inch display with 3G-SDI input and output.

Optik View

Optik View is the medical display brand of The Linden Group Corporation in Cedar Knolls, New Jersey. The Linden Group has more than 20 years of experience designing and manufacturing displays that other companies sell under their own names (OEM and ODM work), and its ISO 13485 quality system covers the development, production and distribution of medical LCD displays. It sells to medical device makers and to distributors that serve operating rooms, endoscopy and ambulatory surgery centers, and radiology departments.

The range includes displays for PACS, the systems hospitals use to store and view medical images, covering diagnosis, mammography and clinical review. One example is a 6MP 30-inch color PACS display that calibrates itself using front and ambient light sensors. For surgery, there is the SC31810, a 4K surgical display. The Linden Group is the applicant on FDA 510(k) clearances for displays paired with QUBYX PerfectLum calibration software (example in the FDA database). Optik View displays are also sold by Skytron.

Amedicom

Amedicom is the diagnostic display line of ARMSTEL, Inc., a Dallas company that works across medical imaging electronics: image presentation, communication, displays and calibration software. Its customers range from hospitals and other healthcare facilities to individual physicians.

The line includes the MDA2120-2Li and MDA2120-3Li. ARMSTEL’s ARMSATT® algorithm lets a standard 8-bit color LCD show 11-bit grayscale, or 2,048 gray levels. The MDA2120 uses front and ambient light sensors to keep itself adjusted to the DICOM grayscale standard. ARMSTEL also holds a US patent for checking and calibrating medical displays remotely.

Surgical and operating room equipment companies

Each company in this group sells surgical displays alongside its surgical equipment, often made to work with their own camera or operating room systems. Most of the displays here are 32-inch 4K models, and Stryker also offers an OLED version. If your hospital already uses one of these systems, the display from the same company is the natural one to check first.

Other US companies with medical display lines

For these ten companies, medical displays are one product line among several. Their main business is something else, such as computers, custom electronics or equipment service.

The first six sell finished medical displays under their own names, which hospitals and distributors can buy directly. Canvys, US Micro Products and Portwell mainly build displays for companies that make medical devices. HP, a general computer brand, comes last.

Frequently asked questions

Which US companies in this guide manufacture medical displays?

Cybernet (CyberMed), Touchstone and The Linden Group (Optik View) say they design and manufacture their own displays, and US Micro Products calls itself a hardware manufacturer. FSN offers co-development and production services to other companies. Richardson Electronics, the parent of Canvys, lists production sites in the US and Germany. TRU-Vu says it designs in the US and works with contract assemblers in South Korea and Taiwan.

What is the difference between diagnostic, clinical review and surgical displays?

A diagnostic display is used to read and diagnose radiology images. A clinical review display shows images alongside patient information; check each model’s intended use before relying on it for diagnosis. A surgical display shows the video from endoscopy, laparoscopy and other systems in the operating room. In every case, the intended use is set model by model, not by category.

The surgical displays covered here range from HD to 4K. For more on that choice, see 4K vs Full HD surgical monitors and how to choose a 4K surgical monitor.

Do medical displays need FDA clearance?

The FDA classifies displays for diagnostic radiology as Class II devices that go through 510(k) (FDA classification database). FDA records also list specific surgical displays from LG and Sony as Class II (examples: LG, Sony). Each clearance sets out the uses it permits, so check the cleared use of the exact model you plan to buy. Keep in mind that a company being registered with the FDA, or a product being listed, is not the same as clearance (FDA).

What does DICOM calibration mean?

DICOM PS3.14 defines the Grayscale Standard Display Function (GSDF), a common way of displaying grayscale so that images look consistent across calibrated displays. It does not set a minimum brightness, and it does not define a display function for color images (DICOM PS3.14). Several of the displays above, such as the Amedicom MDA2120, calibrate to it automatically.

Where can I buy EIZO, Barco or LG medical displays in the Americas?

EIZO and Barco are the brands that appear most often in this guide’s distributor lists.

  • EIZO: Hiliex, Cadmet and USA Medical and Surgical Supplies (US); Aci Biomédica (Mexico); Fissore (Argentina); TIMED (Chile); Intecmedics (Colombia); SALUTECH (Peru). Island Corporation (Canada) and X Ray Group (Peru) also appear in EIZO’s distributor directory.
  • Barco: Monitors.com, Hiliex, Elecom Systems and USA Medical and Surgical Supplies (US); Radiology Monitors Canada and Island Corporation (Canada); DTEC (Mexico); TIMED (Chile); MC Medical (Colombia).
  • LG: National Imaging Systems (Canada, for OAR members).

In the US, Ampronix also describes itself as an authorized distributor for EIZO, Barco, LG and other brands. If your surgical display has to work with a specific camera or OR system, it is also worth checking the display offered by that system’s maker.
